Music Hath Charms ...

Sweet Patrick often, and unwillingly, finds himself "along for the ride."  He goes to Claudia's school everyday.  He goes to the grocery store.  He goes to my eye doctor appointments.  You get the gist.  It is regrettable that he does not care for being crammed into the carseat and shuttled about town.  More often than not, my car is magically (or maniacally) transformed into a torture chamber on wheels, Patrick screaming his little heart out.  I suspect he is trying to say something along the lines of "Why are you doing this to me?  WHY!!!  Release me!!!"  Fortunately, big sister and Mommy have found the solution to his woes!  Sing to the man!  It doesn't always work, but it often cheers him up long enough for our ear drums to stop ringing.   Here we are, doing our best to make him smile and pipe down a bit.

She is THREE!

Claudia, here are just a few special facts about you.  You have the most tender heart, but the spirit of a lion.  You make us laugh every day.  You stick up for your friends.  Everyday you gently shake your baby brother's hand and say "how do you do?!!"  If allowed, you could eat your weight in marshmallows.  You fall down.  Very much, quite often.  But you always bounce back up like nothing happened.  You sing yourself to sleep at night.  You use the phrase "well, actually" about a hundred times a day.  Your favorite Disney princess is Sleeping Beauty.  You have invented a nonsensical language called "Koona Shoona" which consists of Japanese + jibberish.  You like to dress yourself, but are receptive to some coaching from Mommy.  When you wake up in the morning, you go straight for Daddy and ask him to come downstairs with you for breakfast.  You love bubble baths.   Your hair is still very much curly.  Your best friends are Carsten, Emily and Mira.  You know how to ride your tricycle.  You tell everyone that you are from Teeexas.  You light up our days and thankfully sleep through the nights.  We love you, love you, love you!  Happy third birthday!

Birthday girl enjoyed her special day.

Fifteen of her buddies came over for a day of cake, bouncy house bouncing, a safari scavenger hunt and a little garden soccer match.

The day started out with a festooned door and the annual measuring.  Claudia is officially over three feet tall!

Happy birthday to YOU!

There is no one alive who is youer than you!!

A Playdate for Paddy

This is beautiful Ilse!  She is Carsten's baby sister and was born here a few weeks before Paddy.  We get the babies together for playdates (also with beautiful Baby Sarah, not pictured here).

In case you've ever wondered...

... this is how a newborn playdate goes.   I suspect they'll have much more fun later.

Two Easter Miracles!

This blog post is for Jerelyn McLendon, who is recovering beautifully in New Orleans after receiving a heart and kidney transplant on Easter day!  After keeping Aunt  Jerelyn in a coma following the surgery, she awakened a few days later with a smile across her face.  And just like that, the McLendon family celebrated TWO resurrections this Easter!  Here are some pictures from how we spent Easter in Budapest this year.
Claudia hunted eggs with her best buddy Carsten.  The Easter Bunny left many "treats and goooodies!"  Carsten's mommy took these great pictures and even made this fun collage, which is great because I was holding Paddy and didn't get many pictures!

Claudia has made a ton of Easter and Spring crafts.  Almost all of these were done at school, where they also had their Easter egg hunt and Easter petting zoo.  I've unofficially decided (unless Gram has other plans), that I'm going to take pictures of most of Claudia's crafts as a means of preserving them.  Her arts and crafts are really piling up.  It's beautiful & I love everything she makes.  It's. Just. That. There's. No. More. Room....

We had TWO Easter bunnies visit us.  The Budapest Bunny and the Texas Bunny.  Lucky us, huh?

Claudia tearing into the loot from the Texas bunny

Paddy and his first basket... "for me?!" he says.

Claudia was a good big sis and helped Paddy (and herself) with most of his goodies.

CC and Paddy in their Easter finest.

CC sure loves her Paddy Cakes.

Paddy might resist that love, but he can't dispute it.
Claudia sure does try her best not to smoosh our little man.

And little man is definitely not as terrified of her as he once was.  God Bless my little angels.  I am so thankful for these two children... and so thankful they simultaneously napped today too!  Hope everyone had a wonderful Easter!   We love you Aunt Jerelyn!

High Fashion and Learning Japanese

Before you get disappointed, this post is about a kindergarten fundraiser for charity and Claudia is self teaching herself Japanese Jibberish (a hybrid between actual Japanese and complete and total nonsense).   If this interests you, read on.   Last week Claudia's school put on a "fashion show" to raise money for the Budapest branch of an international orphanage group, SOS Gyermekfalu Magyarorszagi Alapitvanya. The show had a mix of children from the school and children from the orphanage appearing on stage. It was a great event that raised funds for the orphanage and also raised awareness of the plight of the countless children that are living without families.

Each class had a theme.  Claudia's class theme was "under the sea."  I asked Claudia what she was, she said "a fish.  I guess."  With some help from her teachers, she glued all the string to her fish suit.

Little girl enjoyed her moment to shine.

And this is Haruki.  Haruki is a sweet little boy from Japan that just joined Claudia's class.  He doesn't speak any English yet.  To help him adjust, Claudia has graciously taken it upon herself to learn Japanese and speak Japanese when conversing with Haruki.  Her teachers report that she does speak some words in Japanese, but about 90% of what she says to Haruki is just jibberish.  I suspect he is now more confused than ever.

And this was the cutest thing ever... one of Claudia's classmates, a sweet boy from Switzerland, was flooded with joy the moment he saw his mom sitting beside the runway.   Too sweet.

Claudia was also overjoyed when she saw Russell and me.  Can you see the unrestrained joy in her eyes?  It's there.

Here's some of Claudia's favorite friends from her class.  Otto and Emily. The following pictures are just some of my favorites from the show.  They are all from the class whose theme was "buildings around the world".   The children themselves created these costumes.  I was very impressed!

igloo

Empire State Building

Grass hut

Chinese home, complete with Chinese lanterns

My favorite... the teepee (is that how you spell that?  it doesn't look right, but I'm too lazy to look it up.)

Sweet C "backstage" after the "show"... Daddy brought her a marshmallow as a reward for doing so great.  Well done C!

Paddy is Two Months!

My sweet Patrick Wallce is two months old.  That's twice as old as he was last month I did this.   I wish I could say he is all smiles... but he is mostly scowls, punctuated with sporadic moments of big open mouth grins and happy gurgly sounds.   But I will take that!  And I'll admit that his scowls make me laugh.  I've never seen anything like it.  A baby that scowls.  And he did it from the moment he was born!   We love you sweet Paddy Cakes.
He's already looking much bigger than last month, right?  He went to his two month check up with Dr. Orsy today and he now weighs 10 lbs, 14 oz and is 23.5 inches long.  His head circumference is 15.7, if I remember correctly.  Here he is smiling.
And here he is scowling.  Daddy showed up in the middle of his photo shoot.  Paddy did NOT want his belly tickled.

Eventually, he decided Daddy deserved a smile as well.

Did I mention he is a serious little fellow?

Big sis showed up next.   Bed head and all.

Look at that face.  Good grief!  I think I had told her not to knock the pictures off the wall.  What I killjoy I am!

So then Paddy just begged me to get out the camera and take a slew of pictures of him.  So I obliged him of course.
He's surprising cooperative for the camera.  We got a lot of sweet pictures of little man.  Here he is relaxing.

And here he is doing what he does best.  Doesn't he look like he's some grouchy 80 year old man who just yelled at some kids to get off his lawn?  I suspect I'll be getting a lot of this face over the years to come.

And this face.  It's the mini scowl.

Sweet boy loves to observe everything around him.  He has freakishing strong legs and tries to stand up in his tummy tub.   He does NOT like to sleep at night.  He prefers to make a joyful noise unto his mommy throughout the night.  It's not my favorite tune, but I know that I will miss our night time parties when they are over.  Thankfully little man does not have any of the issues Claudia had (no reflux, milk allergy or eczema)... phew.   He loves to take baths, listen to his little mouse mobil music on his playmat and tolerates when I read him nursery rhymes.  He loves to be held.

He is sweet Patrick... my baby boy!
